What is blogging?

Blogging is self-publishing content online.

Blogging usually refers to written content, but there is also photo blogging and video blogging (aka. vlogging).

A typical blog is a series of articles – called “blog posts” – with the newest displayed first.

Blogging has been around since the dawn of the internet but the term and practice became popular in the early-to-mid 2000’s. Blogging was initially seen as an alternative to mainstream media, allowing anyone to publish content online quickly and easily with the help of software platforms like Blogger and WordPress.

Nowadays even mainstream media outlets have blogs and bloggers, and the term blogging can encompass someone writing about their stamp collection on some obscure corner of the internet, to professional journalists pumping out content for major publications and getting millions of views per article.

What kind of online business is blogging?

Blogging isn’t so much a business model as it is a form of marketing and communication.

It can be monetized in various ways.

Here’s how blogging fits into our online business framework:

  • Remote Job (Level 2)
It’s entirely possible to get a remote job as a blogger. You would be an employee of a company that pays you to create blog content.
  • Freelance (Level 2)
Blogging is one of the main gigs of freelance writers. They can be hired to write a certain number of blog posts, get paid by the word, or be contracted to work so many hours per week.
  • Agency (Level 3)
Some freelance bloggers evolve into agencies, hiring other freelancers or even remote workers to produce blog content for various clients.
  • Referral (Level 3)
Many affiliate websites start off as simple blogs. They typically review products and monetize via affiliate links.
  • Authority (Level 4)
Authority websites aim to be an authoritative source of information on a particular topic. They are essentially well organized and SEO optimized blogs with excellent content. They can be monetized in various ways.

I could list more types above, as blogging can be used as a marketing vehicle for pretty much every type of online business.

For example, a software company may publish regular blog posts that they hope will be of interest to their ideal customers, aiming to get their brand and product in front of more prospective customers.
