About the Author

Niall Doherty

Hey, I’m Niall Doherty.

I quit my last 9-to-5 job back in 2010.

Since then, I’ve earned my living online in various ways. Over the last 4 years (through 2023) I’ve earned $842,000 from my laptop.

I’m on a mission to accurately rate and review all the best online business courses. My team and I are spending many hours investigating these courses and getting feedback from real students.

All that to say: we know a thing or two about such courses and making money online.

The Best Blogging Course?

We’re on a mission to find the best blogging course, based on feedback from real students combined with our own extensive research.

PIPs is a broad training program but it’s best categorized as a blogging course.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t make the top of our list of best blogging courses…

How does Passive Income Pathways help you make money?

Passive Income Pathways aims to help you make money in several ways, but the main focus seems to be blogging and affiliate marketing.

The official word…

Passive Income Pathways is an online membership that teaches you how to make passive income with blogging and various side hustles, including digital product creation.

I’d say that, like its name suggests, the main goal of Passive Income Pathways is to help students generate passive income.

As Sadie writes on the sales page…

I’m here to give you the tools to make passive income and live the way you want. Frontloading the value, you’re going to deliver and collect $$ for months or even years to come… all with minimal upkeep.

Who is Passive Income Pathways for?

Passive Income Pathways sells itself as a platform for people from all walks of life…

Passive Income Pathways (PIPs) is a monthly coaching membership designed to take you from starting a blog all the way to making six figures with it!

PIPs can definitely help people start a blog, but I’m skeptical that it has helped anyone earn six figures, as I didn’t see any student testimonials that clearly spoke to achieving that level of success.

Does Sadie Smiley have a good reputation?

It’s complicated.

Sadie doesn’t have a huge following, but she does seem to earn a significant income online.

However, it looks like most of Sadie’s income comes via her PIPs membership program.

In Sadie’s April 2022 income report – the most recent income report from her that I found – she reported earning $23,228 in total, with about 75% of that coming from PIPs

passive income pathways review april 2022 income report

I usually don’t have a problem with course creators earning the majority of their income from their course. But apparently Sadie’s business wasn’t doing well UNTIL she launched her training program.

Here’s what she wrote in her February 2022 income report

passive income pathways review february 2022 income report

I find it odd that someone who was struggling with her online business – she literally wrote, “I was fucked” – would immediately launch a course teaching other people how to earn passive income.

Maybe there is more to the story, but it doesn’t sound great the way Sadie explained it in her income reports.

Beyond that, I’m very skeptical that Sadie has had much experience or success with some of the business models she teaches inside PIPs.

For instance, she has courses about selling on Etsy and opening your own PLR shop, but I haven’t seen any evidence that she has earned significant income from those kinds of businesses herself. I would have expected her to show proof of her own earnings at the start of those courses to establish credibility, but I didn’t see anything like that.

Personally, the main thing I would want to learn from Sadie is how to create and sell a membership program. Because she’s done that very successfully with PIPs.

Unfortunately, there’s no course on that particular topic within PIPs itself 😕

On the plus side, Sadie does also mention in her income reports that she donates an impressive amount of money each month to help her local community…

Here’s a video from Sadie’s YouTube channel so you can get a feel for her teaching style…

Are Passive Income Pathways students getting results?

Browse through the official Passive Income Pathways websites and you’ll find some student testimonials.

For example…

passive income pathways review student results
passive income pathways review student testimonials

Most of the testimonials I found were from PIPs VIP members, but I didn’t find them to be all that impressive.

As a reminder, here’s the official aim of the training…

Passive Income Pathways (PIPs) is a monthly coaching membership designed to take you from starting a blog all the way to making six figures with it!

But I have yet to see any 6-figure student success stories.

Well, Jen Schneider’s testimonial above may qualify, but it lacks specifics like pretty much all the PIPs “success stories” I’ve seen.

For a program that apparently has had hundreds of members, I would have expected to see at least a few clear reports of students earning $1000’s per month in passive income.

But I haven’t been able to find them 😕

How much does Passive Income Pathways cost?

For access to Passive Income Pathways, there are three monthly plans to choose from…

  • Lite: $7/month or $67/year
  • Plus: $47/month or $447/year
  • VIP: $97/month

Sadie’s sales pages are a bit messy IMO, so it’s not always clear what’s included and what’s not in the different PIPs packages.

But here’s my attempt to break it all down for you…

PIPs Lite

Official description…

PIPs LITE is a membership for people who want to start a blog, learn how to write amazing blog posts, and dip their toes into the world of working online.

[It] is everything you need for a foundation. It won’t get you to six figures step by step like VIP can, but it’s a start.

Apparently when you sign up for Lite you get…

  • Access to a handful of courses (mainly related to blogging)
  • Monthly group coaching calls
  • Monthly templates to use in your biz
  • Quarterly planning calls
  • Pop-up co-working calls

PIPs Plus

Official description…

PIPs PLUS is a self-paced membership that offers course access, monthly coaching, and more – at a price everyone can afford.  It’s for self-starters who don’t need as much accountability as I offer in VIP.

Along with everything from PIPs Lite, with this tier you also get…

  • Monthly Book Club
  • Access to more courses (eg. affiliate marketing, Etsy store, PLR store)

PIPs VIP

Official description…

VIP is an intense group coaching experience you won’t find anywhere else – use the framework and my gentle guidance to build your business to six figures and beyond.

Picture Jillian Michaels, but for blog coaching.

Along with everything from PIPs Lite and Plus, with this tier you also get…

  • Weekly group coaching calls
  • Access to the VIP only Facebook group
  • Open office hours
  • Planning calls
  • Access to all PIPs courses

Additional expenses?

If you plan to take any of Sadie’s courses related to blogging, you’ll have expenses like hosting and a domain.

Sadie also recommends a bunch of different tools in her courses. Some of her recommended tools (eg. Flodesk) only seem to have paid plans.

Passive Income Pathways Discount?

Despite my intensive search, I’ve found no discount or coupon code.

So the total amount has to be paid for entry.

Refund Policy

The sales pages for all PIPs plans specify a 7-day “no questions asked” money-back guarantee

Not sure if it’s right for you? Don’t worry—I’ve got a 7-day money-back guarantee. If you feel [Lite/Plus/VIP] is not for you, request a refund within 7 days. No questions asked, no hard feelings.

I haven’t seen anyone reporting issues getting a refund on their purchase, so you can rest easy with this guarantee.

How is Passive Income Pathways structured?

Here’s what the training looks like once you log in and open one of the lessons…

passive income pathways review course page

The core Passive Income Pathways training is broken up into numerous courses, most of which have many text-based lessons and an occasional video. I found the videos much more practical as they usually feature screencasts, going more in-depth than the text articles.

Unfortunately, a good chunk of the text lessons, such as the one pictured above, only feature a few sentences.

Here’s another example of that…

passive income pathways review text from a lesson
The entire text from a lesson in Sadie’s affiliate marketing course.

While I agree that resourcefulness is something every successful online business owner must develop, I feel lessons like this speak to one of the main issues with PIPs: it tries to cover so much ground that it doesn’t go very deep on any one topic.

Moving on, I also found PIPs hard to navigate. For a training with “pathways” in the name, it’s not always clear what path to follow or which course to start with. And I didn’t see any search function that would help me refer back to specific materials or topics.

On the plus side, the training has lots of bonuses. Pretty much every course starts off with a list of handy resources such as spreadsheets and fillable workbooks.

As for community, if you join PIPs Lite or Plus you just have access to the Facebook group that’s free for anyone to join but doesn’t seem all that active…

passive income pathways review facebook group activity

If you join PIPs VIP, you get access to a VIP-only Facebook group. I was unable to find any info on that.

Green Lights 🟢

Here are a few things to like about Passive Income Pathways…

  • Decent introduction to various ways of making money online.
  • Lots of bonuses.
  • Low price to get started.

Red Flags 🚩

A few things to be wary of regarding Passive Income Pathways…

  • Lack of significant success stories from students.
  • Recurring monthly expense to keep access to the training.
  • So much content it can be overwhelming, and not always easy to find your way around.
  • Some of the courses/lessons seem extremely thin.
  • Sadie’s business was apparently struggling before she started PIPs.
  • No mention on sales page of expenses beyond the price of the training.

Other things you should know

  • You will encounter useful downloads throughout the training, including things like spreadsheets.

Should you join Passive Income Pathways?

Personally, I’d be hesitant to join this course given all the above.

Although PIPs claims it’ll help you earn a six-figure income, it looks to me like it’s mostly suitable for beginners, and even then I believe there are better options.

As noted above, the course seems to cover a lot without going very deep on anything, and I’m not convinced that Sadie has had much success or experience with the various business models she teaches.

It was good but I eventually left

I joined PIPs Lite for $7/ month in August 2022. I was able to use that set of courses to start a new blog and restart an old blog with plugins and things that made the sites run much faster than what I was using.

After several months I found out that the recommended settings in the course creator’s blogging course actually block you from getting onto Google and only one of the other people in the group figured out why.

Not sure if that was ever changed in the training. So that defeats the entire SEO of the course.

Then I was promised that if I created a course on a specific subject and gave it to her to review she would promote it, only to be told once I was done that her audience doesn’t listen to men and she wouldn’t promote it at all.

The last straw was her pushing everyone to a new platform (AGAIN) that she was an affiliate for.

That platform couldn’t do half of what the other platform could. It was 5x the cost but she got more money in commissions on it.

After I left I heard that she changed platforms again.

Pros and Cons

  • The community was the best part of this.
  • The people there did want to help each other and there was a good group of people, but men were tolerated at best.
  • There are a number of good tips and tricks in the course.
  • There is little to no organization for these courses.
  • The information in them is missing critical components for you to succeed but you will be blamed for bringing that up.
  • The leader of this course is all over the place and lacks consistency.

Don't waste your money

I started Passive Income Pathways hoping to make money from my blog. While I have learned a lot about how to build a website and write articles I have not made any money.

The courses are bits and pieces of information. Think mini-course with information you can google.

Sadie is all over the place and jumps around from one thing to another. She distracts people with whatever new ideas she has that will make her money, not you.

Sadie’s constantly promoting her stuff and guilts people who don’t share her links to courses and memberships. She’s even said if VIPs don’t promote other VIPs she won’t help them. I’m all for helping people out and collaborating but sometimes a business doesn’t go with my business so it’s not a good fit.

She always talks about how easy it is but when you try to ask her questions she doesn’t have time to help you. She’s ignored my posts in the group asking for help on multiple occasions and I’ve seen her do the same to many other people.

After over a year of being in this group, I have yet to make any money… like zero. It seems that people that Sadie favors had their businesses featured in weekly newsletters, in her courses, and on weekly coaching calls, so the rest of us in the group never get a shout-out.

There has also been quite a bit of conflicting information over the last year. I’ve seen Sadie give advice to people and then turn around and give conflicting advice to someone else. Some were niche ideas that were great one month and terrible the next, etc. That’s huge when people depend on someone to be their business coach and guide them on a path toward success.

All-in-all there’s not a lot of real coaching going on in this membership. It’s a one-size-fits-all group model where the members are encouraged to buy Sadie’s products and use her affiliate links, as well as buy other VIP members’ products.

Pros and Cons

  • I learned how to set up my website in WordPress.
  • Gained confidence in building an online business.
  • Lack of real business coaching.
  • Favoritism of group members.
  • Lots of conflicting information within the membership with a disorganized feeling.

Best decision I ever made!

The PIPs program is one of the best decisions I have ever made! Outside of the low-ticket membership price, which is amazing, the community I am now a part of is like family. The support in the PIPs group and the VIP group is unheard of in other coaching memberships. I love that Sadie promotes programs and platforms that are cost-effective and truly the best on the market rather than pushing high-paying affiliates like most other blogging coaches. She is a down-to-earth coach who isn’t afraid to tell you how it is. I respond well to direct instructions, and that’s why I do so well with Sadie. She has a path – one that’s proven to work – and she will do her best to keep you on that path.

This program has helped me set up my main blog, create an active Facebook Group, syndicate my blog posts, set up web stories, sell courses and printables, and grow my email list. Recently, I set up a new blog that has already gained traction on Google, as well as sold courses and templates. I’ve been included in summits for both brands, as well as bundles. The information and guidance from the PIPs program have led to the success that I see today and it will only get better!

I have been a member of the VIP program for almost a year now. While I am starting to see money from the multiple sources of income that PIPs recommends, I haven’t reached a steady income yet. I am a stay-at-home-mum who blogs as a way to focus on “work” rather than my kids all the time. If I needed to have the additional income, and if I put more effort into the PIPs path, I do not doubt that I would already be making a steady income from blogging at this point. But as a mom, I took some time off due to the seasons we were in. The path that Sadie and her team lay out is both achievable and profitable.

Sadie is easily accessible with her live coaching calls and the VIP Facebook Group. Still, she is a “no excuses” and “do the thing” type of coach. That means that she is only interested in what you have been working on, not your life situations that might get in the way. While she empathizes with you when things come up, ultimately, she wants to know if you got the work done. After all, she’s our coach, not our therapist.

The information and guidance from the PIPs program are unseen anywhere else. Sadie will shoot it to you straight and cheer you on simultaneously. I am so glad I found this program at the beginning of my blogging career rather than at the end.

Pros and Cons

  • Information to build a blog from the ground up
  • Easily accessible coaches and support staff
  • Community and honest recommendations
  • That I didn’t find it sooner

Passive Income Pathways is a Great Investment

PIPs has been a great investment. I have tried many other programs before, but within months or just a few days I would stop. PIPs has provided me with the framework to succeed and created a foundation to build upon my future success.

Sadie teaches ‘outside of the box’ and that is how I learn. She invested a lot of time into getting to know my niche to help me succeed, as well as to teach me how to make money doing it.

I started PIPs in April 2022 and in June 2022 I started making money. It has been steady ever since as I’ve set up different streams of income along the way. Sadie gives a lot of ideas on how to do that. You can take them or leave them, but they are there to use when I’m ready to add another layer.

Over the year I’ve seen her revamp and streamline her training. She helped so many even for free. I appreciate and respect her transparency. The Publish not Perfect program has helped me move past many roadblocks to get my words, products, and message out there. Thanks to Sadie, my son and I were featured in the New York Times! That wouldn’t have happened without her group, membership, and coaching.

Pros and Cons

  • Ease of use
  • Video and written instructions
  • Customer service for questions
  • Length of videos. I referred to the transcripts instead.

Half-baked course masking a cult

I signed up to learn how to make active money right now and set up a passive income for later. The web copy at the time said “We’ll help you figure out how to make money NOW so you’re not worrying about your bills while you work on your passive income streams.”

The membership didn’t include an order like the copy said it would — whether you should start with a digital Etsy shop or PLR shop. Almost every single video or tutorial in the courses included in the membership was already published to her blog, free FB group, or YouTube, so what you’re paying for is the curation of that content.

And you don’t get much new content, either. It’s the same content for continued course access.

Unless you’re in the top tier of her membership, she doesn’t care about you. She replied to one comment that she mostly hangs out in the exclusive FB group for the top tier, so students should join that if they want the real community. That didn’t sit right with me, but I dismissed it because I couldn’t believe it. Still, it was proven true when I would comment, ask questions and share my stuff.

I cringe now at everything I wrote, but I was trying to participate and put in the work. I gave it my all.

The conditions for being a cult leader instead of an actual coach include insisting people do it your way to a T, which she is guilty of. If you’re struggling and did anything in your way to be unique instead of a clone, the failure is blamed on you.

There are also no excuses allowed at all. I have a disability that makes planning and setting goals difficult because every single day is extremely different. I told her what it was, and she now makes “No Excuses” posts/quotes where top-tier members comment with traits of that disability.

I expected a neurodivergent course creator to be accessible and not able-ist, but she is not friendly to neurodivergent disabled people who struggle. You’re not allowed to have different opinions about something. If you don’t think the same way as her about something, she asks you why you’re there and tells you that “you should have known” when it’s nowhere on the copy.

I recently left altogether because I realized she tells members what to do when she doesn’t even do it herself. I didn’t want to be her guinea pig anymore. I didn’t want to be sharing my ideas and successes from my strategies only for her to keep taking it without any credit and then profiting from it — only to tell me that I have “no excuses” now to “do the thing”.

For someone who also has ADHD, it’s ironic to use that as a slogan when executive dysfunction is the inability to “do the thing”.

It just felt very icky and as if I couldn’t be myself while starting a business. I’ve since learned otherwise and escaped her cult. That’s exactly what it is, and I wish I knew sooner before giving her any of my money. I’ve wasted the last year on her teachings and am right back where I started.

Pros and Cons

  • I got an idea of how to start a printables biz. It was incomplete, but it helped me figure out how to get started and find help from someone else who walks you through it.
  • Some of her students create useful things (though I don't appreciate the membership bit unless there is new content).
  • I was told to google instead of ask for help from the course creator. The community isn't receptive to you unless you're in VIP or she makes you popular.
  • Not enough information. It felt like projects that were never completed. The templates shared felt cheap and just thrown together without actual testing. I would never pay for those.
  • The course is flat and has CTAs to drive traffic to her blog which is annoying.

PIPs expanded my business model beyond my wildest dreams

Hands down this is one of the most influential programs I’ve ever been a part of. PIPs isn’t just a course, but a framework that requires careful planning and execution to bring in a high-earning passive income.

If you own a blog that hasn’t been monetized, this is the space for you. Once I learned that ads weren’t the only way to monetize a blog, my entire outlook on running a digital business changed.

Since I took the course in December, I’ve created 5 additional streams of passive income. I also passed the 5k mark on one of the courses I created 3 years ago but wasn’t selling. The framework inside of PIPs helped me create a customer journey that allowed me to find my people and sell to them.

Pros and Cons

  • The weekly coaching calls
  • The amount of information offered
  • The tried and true structure of the framework
