$30k/month selling celebrity contact info

That’s a site called Contact Any Celebrity, as profiled on Starter Story.

It’s an ancient business by Internet standards, with owner Jordan McAuley having created the first version back in 1997. It operates as a membership site now, and got a nice boost from being mentioned in The 4-Hour Workweek.

My favorite part from the SS article:

One cool story is a Member who wanted to get her custom bedazzled shoes to celebrities. She used my site to send custom bedazzled shoes to Paris Hilton.

Soon after, Paris Hilton wore them on the red carpet! That story was featured in The Guardian in the United Kingdom where they mentioned Contact Any Celebrity.

4 newsletters making over $1 million a year

Noah Kagan goes through them in this video 👈

They are:

The last one makes “only” $360k a year, so it seems Noah took some liberties with the headline. But still hugely impressive for a one-person newsletter.

Also mentioned in that video is Trends by The Hustle, which I reviewed in-depth a few weeks back.

In a recent Trends subscribers-only email, founder Sam Parr wrote:

Newsletters are dead. I’m sorry, this is negative. But I have to address it. Newsletters are all the rage right now. But the real winners are already 5-8 years into the journey. It’s much harder to start a big (1m+) newsletter today than it was a few years ago. So, even though newsletters are stupidly popular right now, I predict very few new winners in 2021. Instead, the REAL winners will take that concept to a new medium.

The weirdest way to make money online?

While doing some keyword research yesterday I stumbled across a site called OnlyTheBreast.com.

It’s a site for buying and selling breast milk 🍼

I researched it a bit and found a woman on a TV show a few years back saying she earned $2000 in 6 months via the site. Vice also did a big piece on this topic in 2016 and reported that one woman earned $4000 selling her milk.

However, Vice also reported that most women struggle to sell their milk and regularly have to deal with scammers and wet nursing enthusiasts 🤢

Naturally, I went ahead and added this to my list of weird ways to make money online.

Finding the best side hustles

I recently contributed to this article about finding the best side hustles.

Here’s what I told them:

I’ve seen most people having success starting out with freelancing. Many people already have skills they can use to freelance – writing is one of the most popular – and even if you don’t have any existing skills you can learn enough in a few weeks to land your first paying clients.

For example, my friend Justin started learning web development from scratch and landed a client at $9/hour within two months. He then started learning Google Adwords and a year later was up to $50/hour.

You can have that kind of fast success with many freelance skills. Whereas with something like affiliate marketing or dropshipping it can take years before you’re actually earning a living from your efforts.

I also like the advice in there from Nick Loper of Side Hustle Nation:

Pick a software tool you love, with bonus points for being an early adopter, and start answering questions about it online. Paul Minors did this with Asana, Pipedrive, and a couple others, creating written and YouTube content, and ending up building a really healthy location-independent consulting operation.

See Nick’s full interview with Paul for more on that approach.

Marijuana Market Inflection

Apparently there have been some elections in the USA this week 😜

One thing being overshadowed by all the presidential drama are the changing drug laws in several states.

Sam Altman once wrote:

“Any time you can think of something that is possible this year and wasn’t possible last year, you should pay attention. You may have the seed of a great startup idea.”

What do these changing drug laws make possible?

For inspiration, here’s a list of 10 marijuana business ideas.

One not mentioned there is starting a YouTube channel. Not an easy path to riches by any means, but here are a couple of marijuana channels that are likely earning several thousand dollars a month.

Guy sells Mac app for 12 months in Bali

Well, kinda.

Andrey Azimov tells the full story. It includes getting stung by a scorpion and hit in the head with a beer bottle 🙈

The app itself is an alarm that goes off if someone unplugs or closes your laptop when it’s left unattended in a cafe.

Key points:

  • Andrey only had 6 months’ experience as a macOS developer
  • He pre-sold the app with a video showing how it would work
  • Total revenue from the app was $834
  • Then someone offered to buy it
  • Sale price was “about 12–16 months of living expenses here in Bali.”

That’d be at least $10k then, maybe as much as $20k 💰

I’m sure the way Andrey built his app also worked in his favor. Seems he did it very publicly. The person who bought the app was actually an acquaintance he let try it for free.

The most harmful dragon we chase

From The Obstacle Is The Way by Ryan Holiday:

the most harmful dragon we chase is the one that makes us think we can change things that are simply not ours to change. That someone decided not to fund your company, this isn’t up to you. But the decision to refine and improve your pitch? That is. That someone stole your idea or got to it first? No. To pivot, improve it, or fight for what’s yours? Yes.

Focusing exclusively on what is in our power magnifies and enhances our power. But every ounce of energy directed at things we can’t actually influence is wasted—self-indulgent and self-destructive.

I have that down as the “best book for tough times” in my list of best business books for online entrepreneurs 📚
