Step-By-Step SEO Tutorial

Almost 90% of visitors to eBiz Facts come via search, so there’s a good chance you’re receiving this newsletter because you found my site via Google and then subscribed 💌

It also means that most of the site’s revenue ($13.5k last month) is driven by search traffic.

That’s all down to search engine optimization, and the best free resource I’ve found for learning SEO is Brian Dean’s Backlinko blog.

Brian recently released this impressive SEO tutorial that you should check out if you want to up your SEO game.

Could you be an SEO freelancer?

Even if you don’t have a website of your own, consider learning SEO as a skill to freelance.

Ahrefs ran a survey a couple of years back and found that 50% of SEO freelancers were charging at least $75/hour. And it’s probably even more now 🤑

You could take pretty much any section of Brian Dean’s aforementioned tutorial, learn the basics of it, then pitch your services to clients:

  • Keyword research
  • Content creation
  • Optimizing content for UX
  • On-page SEO
  • Content promotion
  • Link building
  • Technical SEO

You could even get more specific and provide one of the 7 link building services Brian lists here.

The coolest thing about learning a skill like SEO is that you can earn money as a freelancer AND apply the same skill to your own projects down the line 😎

(Skills like copywriting and Facebook ads are also great in that respect.)

The psychology behind TikTok’s addictive feed

An excellent overview of TikTok and why it’s so addictive.

Worth a look whether you’ve used TikTok or not. It’ll help you understand the platform better 🤓

My favorite quote:

I swiped through 183 more videos. It was like eating dessert non-stop while being already full.

Related: you might have heard about Trump seeking to ban TikTok in the US – here’s the latest on that.

Also related: if you run a “boring, mundane business,” you could probably go viral on TikTok.

$1.5 million selling masks on Etsy

From The Verge:

Charlette Chang, sold more than 200,000 fabric masks through her store, DoubleJoyDesigns, raking in around $1.5 million in sales. She had only been on Etsy for a matter of months before the pandemic hit, having started a T-shirt shop in September 2019. That put her in just the right position, though — she was already working with a factory to make clothing, so she directed them to make masks instead.

Crazier still:

Between April and June, shoppers purchased $346 million worth of masks from Etsy stores

🤯

Simple hack for improved focus

Cal Newport asks if smartphones make us dumber, and shares the results from a 2017 study…

Subjects measured notably lower on working memory capacity and fluid intelligence when the phone was next to them on the desk versus out of sight. This was true even though in all the cases the subjects didn’t actually use their phones.

The mere presence of the device, in other words, sapped cognitive resources.

Given that, if you want to improve your focus and get more work done, keep your phone out of sight 🙈

Quick analysis of 50 businesses

If you liked my list of ways to come up with a business idea, you’re sure to like this 👉 Find Your Next Business Idea With 50 Different Examples

Each example is broken down with the C.P.S.O Framework:

  • Who is the Customer?
  • What is their Pain?
  • What is the Solution?
  • What is the Offer?

As they say in the article:

If you can’t explain your business in these simple terms, you are in trouble.

$10k presales for an ebook

That’s Steph Smith’s new book, Doing Content Right.

Some details gleaned via this thread by Steph on Twitter:

  • Validated the idea with this tweet back in July
  • As of Wednesday, she’d sold $23.5k
  • Steph’s street cred: 8k Twitter followers and works as product manager for The Hustle

Lessons from a $163,360 client

Brian Speronello reveals how he found a freelance client that ended up paying him $163,360 over 3.5 years (average of almost $4k/month)

He calls it “partnership marketing”…

one of the fastest ways to attract quality clients is by partnering with other — non-competitive — businesses who already work with your ideal clients. And who also fit into one of three categories…

They sell a product or service to your ideal clients that comes (1) before, (2) during, or (3) after the services you offer.

Brian is a copywriter. He partnered with a friend who offers conversion rate optimization services. During a CRO project, a client would often need copy, and that work would be outsourced to Brian.

Brian did such a good job that the client hired him directly for more copywriting work… eventually amounting to $163k 💰

  • Can you think of some businesses who offer complimentary services to your ideal clients?
  • Could you partner with them?

$100 hidden in last week’s email

Just for kicks, I hid a $100 giveaway in last week’s newsletter.

Only one person spotted it.

I may do another one in the coming weeks 😉
