$85 million for an Instagram meme page

From The Hustle:

Warner Music Group just ponied up ~$85m for one of the internet’s most successful meme factories.

The deal was technically for IMGN Media, a network of popular esports, comedy, and ASMR accounts. But the biggest IMGN prize is Daquan, an Instagram account followed by Drake, The Weeknd, Justin Bieber, and 15m+ others.

An anonymous high schooler started it in 2014 — then built it into a media empire.

Here’s the @daquan Instagram if you want to check it out.

My favorite meme on there: Me bouncing back from an L 🛹

Online Money Maker Profiles

🤑 Some profiles we published recently:

How to find consulting clients

Lots of good tips in this article by Chris Achard.

My favorite part:

Go to the local people who you’ve met and say:

“I’m starting to look for companies who need help with [X] – do you know of anyone I should talk to?”

The phrasing of that question is important. If you just ask them if their company is looking for consultants – then you’re really limited their answers to just “yes” or “no”.

By asking if there is anyone you should talk to though – they’ll really think about other people they know as well.

Most of my clients in the past have not come directly from people I knew – but people who knew people I knew.

Local Newsletter > Local Newspaper

Andrew Wilkinson shares on Twitter how he started a newsletter in Canada 🇨🇦 to cover local news stories.

Started about a year ago and now has 40k subscribers, which works out to about 1 in every 10 people in the local area being subscribed to the newsletter.

We are now bigger than The Times Colonist, the 100 yr old daily paper.

He doesn’t say how much the business earns, but sounds like it’s profitable and I reckon there’s plenty of opportunity to do this elsewhere in the world 🤔

5 ways to make money on Facebook

Facebook lists four here:

  • In-stream ads
  • Fan subscriptions
  • Branded content
  • Subscription groups

A fifth announced recently: paid online events

A couple of profiles we’ve done of people making money on Facebook:

How Ivan beat 50+ freelancers on Upwork

A text and video walk through of how I hired a web developer on Upwork.

I show exactly why I chose the person I did, and how his proposal stood out from all the rest.

The common denominator of success

Here’s a speech delivered in 1940 by Albert E. N. Gray, an official of the Prudential Insurance Company of America.

The entire thing is worth a read – it’s a fairly short speech – but the parts about “doing things when you don’t want to do them” especially resonated with me:

The common denominator of success – secret of success of every individual who has ever been successful – lies in the fact that he or she formed the habit of doing things that failures don’t like to do.

[…] success is something which is achieved by the minority of people, and is therefore unnatural and not to be achieved by following our natural likes and dislikes nor by being guided by our natural preferences and prejudices.

What are the things you don’t want to do today?

Chances are, your competitors don’t want to do those things either. So if you can knuckle down and get them done, you’ll have them beat for today at least 💪
