Landing an $800+ writing gig

This week I heard from a subscriber who recently started freelance writing and quickly landed an $800+ job on Upwork 🤑 writing product descriptions and blog announcements.

These were the resources he found useful for getting started (all free):

Related resource I came across this morning: a video showing how Mike Nardi learned copywriting and started earning $3000/month via Fiverr in only 18 months

Trending business model: paid communities

It seems the pandemic is making paid communities a more viable business model 🤗

Channing Allen writes about the trend and shares examples on Indie Hackers.

These three examples, he notes, are all just a few weeks or months old:

(For more examples along these lines, see past editions of eBiz Weekly: #28 and #31)

Free courses on Teachable

Teachable is a platform that makes it easy to create an online course. They have a page listing some free courses by creators.

Several courses there related to building an online business, including:

Looks like some are only free for a limited time so I signed up for a bunch of them just in case 😎

Day Trading = 99% Losers

A new video from Coffeezilla, breaking down what a couple of scientific papers 🤓 say about day trading.

In short:

“It is virtually impossible for an individual to day trade for a living, contrary to what brokerage specialists and course providers often claim.”

Business books from independent bookstores

I found this recent episode of the Rework Podcast fascinating.

It’s about a bookshop.org, “a platform to help independent bookstores take and fulfill online orders.” They’re basically trying to be Amazon minus the cutthroat capitalism 😇📚

I found many of my favorite business books available to order on the site and started building a collection here.

It’s not great for ebooks yet, but worth a look for the good old-fashioned ink and paper stuff.

1-person $15k/month unlimited design service

Piecing together this story from a recent post on Hacker News and a January post on Indie Hackers, both by Brett Williams.

  • Brett’s business is DesignJoy
  • Launched 3 years ago
  • Clients pay a monthly subscription (starting at $497) and get unlimited graphic design work
  • Revenue was at $6k/month in January, now at $15k/month
  • Brett reported in January that he was doing this while holding down a full-time UX job

Sprezzatura is an Italian word that first appears in Baldassare Castiglione’s 1528 The Book of the Courtier, where it is defined by the author as “a certain nonchalance, so as to conceal all art and make whatever one does or says appear to be without effort and almost without any thought about it”

The Oxford English Dictionary defines sprezzatura as “studied carelessness.”

Think of celebrities spending hours in makeup and wardrobe before casually dominating the red carpet 💃 Or a comedian practicing a joke for months until they have the wording and rhythm just right 😂 Or the fighter who has practiced one kick ten thousand times 🥋

Words from a short 4-minute video on YouTube:

The implementation of sprezzatura grants the individual manipulative power over those observing. It produces a style that makes the observer think that the individual is so skilled, confident and carefree that they don’t even have to try.

Keep this concept in mind whenever you see someone earning lots of money online. If they make it look or sound easy, assume that’s sprezzatura, that they had to work damn hard for it to appear effortless.

Michael Jordan’s Online Course

Good news if you enjoyed the Last Dance documentary: Michael Jordan will soon be releasing a new online course.

In it, he’ll teach you how to make the NBA in only 90 days, even if you’re short, fat and have never played basketball before.

The course costs $4,997 but MJ is launching it at a special price of only $997.

Pretty awesome, right?

I’m joking, of course.

That analogy was inspired by an excellent interview with Miles Beckler, who shared what it really took to build an affiliate website to $6000/month in less than a year.

In short, it took non-stop 50-hour workweeks and it would have taken far longer if he didn’t already have two decades of internet marketing experience under his belt.

This video showing continuous improvements made at a factory in the US had me drooling 🤤

As did the tour of the factory.

Excellent example of a clean and efficient operation, the kind of “well-oiled machine” we can all aspire to when building a business, whether online or off.

(And I really hope that hashtag didn’t trigger your spam filter 🤞)
