15 sites to find you a remote job
We recently spent 100+ hours researching and reviewing remote jobs websites.
If you want to find a great remote job fast, these sites are the best we’ve found so far:
- Best overall: FlexJobs
- Best for US-based: Virtual Vocations
- Best for anywhere: Dynamite Jobs
- Best for corporate jobs: FlexJobs
- Best for startup jobs: AngelList
Note that both FlexJobs and Virtual Vocations have premium plans – $15/mo and $13/mo respectively.
Try using promo code SAVE50 or JOBS on FlexJobs for 50% off 😉
20 in-demand skills: $20-150+/hr
IMO, most of the sample rates listed there are for people with lots of experience, so you might want to temper your expectations.
That said, you could well be earning $20/hour with a few of those skills within a few weeks, even if you’re starting from scratch.
Sign of the Times
Three historic companies that usually sell products via regular stores and supermarkets:
- Coca-Cola – founded 1886
- Heinz – founded 1869
- PepsiCo – founded 1902
But now, due to coronavirus, all three are selling direct to consumer via the internet.
No coincidence that ecommerce platform Shopify is booming right now 📈 Even famous brands like Heinz and Heineken using it for their online stores.
At the risk of sounding like a broken record: ecommerce is a good place to be looking these days if your goal is to make money online. Not so much by starting your own store, but by providing services to people already building and running online stores. Think copywriting, ads management, web design, email marketing, etc.
Speaking of which…
Facebook + Instagram Shops
Mark Zuckerberg went live on Tuesday to announce Shops, which basically allows businesses to sell products direct from Facebook pages and Instagram profiles 🤑
Do you know any local businesses that are already on Facebook/Instagram and looking to sell more online?
Could you help them get set up and optimized on Shops?
$10-20/hour as a mock online juror
Things to know:
- They say this is passive income, but it’s clearly not.
- You must be 18+ and live in the US.
- You won’t make a living doing this. More like pocket money.
- Sounds like minorities get picked more.
4 writers + email list = $10 million a year
That’s the story of The Hustle, which is one of three examples here of lucrative newsletter businesses 💰
The other two:
- Stratechery tech newsletter: estimated 100k subscribers each paying $100/year
- Maker Mind productivity newsletter: earned $5k in first month of companion membership service
(This might be a good time to remind you that eBiz Weekly has a companion membership service too 😉)
Dropshipping: It’s Bullshit (Update)
A follow-up to that Wired article I mentioned a couple of weeks back: ‘It’s bullshit’: Inside the weird, get-rich-quick world of dropshipping
Dan and Ian from the Tropical MBA Podcast discussed that article last week and provided some much-needed nuance, though their conclusion is essentially the same: be wary of dropshipping as a business opportunity.
However, as Dan pointed out, dropshipping ain’t the only business opportunity to be wary of:
If there is a lot of guru-ized information and legible courses around the specific kind of business you want to start, it might not be a great business opportunity, it might be low margin, it might be high competition.
True that. What got me nervous about dropshipping initially was seeing how many newbie entrepreneurs were flocking to it back in 2018 🏃♂️
Reminded me of that thing Mark Twain supposedly said:
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.
Turning Hobbies Into Hustles
Molly Conway writes that this is a trap, and quotes Adam J. Kurtz:
“Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life work super fucking hard all the time with no separation or any boundaries and also take everything extremely personally.”
Which, aside from being relatable to anyone who has tried to make money from something they truly care about, speaks to an underrepresented truth: those with passion careers can have just as much career anxiety as those who clock in and out of the mindless daily grind.
In other words, be very careful about building a business around something you’re passionate about 😍
Savage Affiliates review
Here’s my latest review of an affiliate marketing course, this one by Franklin Hatchett.
In brief: it’s worth considering if you’re on a tight budget, but definitely keep your receipt 🧐
(As with all of my reviews, I sent this one to the course creator for feedback. Often I don’t get any response – especially when the review isn’t exactly complimentary – but this time I did. I went back and forth with Frank the past couple of weeks on certain points, and included his comments in the review.)
You can read my latest personal ramblings here. Words about legal threats, among other things 😳
That’ll do it for this week.
Was there anything above that you found particularly useful or interesting?
I aim to pack these emails with the best tips, insights and opportunities for building your online business. Your feedback helps me do that.
Also, feel free to forward this email to a friend, or you can direct them to the online version here: https://ebizfacts.com/ebiz-weekly-72/
