Here’s how much money YouTubers make

Run this search on YouTube and you’ll find lots of folks reporting their income for 2019.

Your earnings on YouTube depend on several things, including:

  • How many views you get … more views = more ad revenue
  • How many ads are in your videos … longer videos = more ad spots
  • The topic of your videos … ad rates fluctuate greatly according to this
  • Non-ads revenue … eg sponsorships, merch, affiliate marketing, etc.

Andrei Jikh’s income report stood out to me.

He started his YouTube channel at the beginning of 2019 and ended the year with $118,040 in ad revenue 💰

But here’s the thing: despite working full-time on his channel from the get-go, Andrei earned ZERO dollars in ad revenue his first two months, and his earnings for the entire year worked out to little more than $5/hour.

He looks like a genius now that he’s “made it,” but spare a thought for those long weeks and months in the beginning when he was putting in the work with no guarantee it would pay off.

Surely helped that he didn’t set his expectations too high: his goal for the year was to earn just $1000 in ad revenue.

Hacking Yelp to find clients

Solid advice for finding clients from a Redditor who currently has 79 clients for his social media marketing agency 👍

I especially like the tip for finding clients via Yelp (emphasis mine):

What I do first is hit up the people that are running ads [on Yelp] because if they are running ads they can more than likely afford your type of service as well. So I go straight to the sponsored results and reach out

You can do the same thing on any platform where businesses buy ads. Google, Facebook, etc.

$6500/month online while raising kids in Madagascar

I mentioned our interview with Alison Rakoto in last week’s newsletter but didn’t give it the prominence it deserves 😕

So here it is again »

Especially worth a read if you’re a parent looking to build an online business.

As one reader commented:

This woman is my new god. Some days my children literally hamper every minute of my time! Mind blown.

$3500/month writing about cannabis and crypto

Here’s our newest interview on eBiz Facts: How I earn $3500/month online, writing about cannabis and cryptocurrency

Zoë (our interviewee) intentionally focused on those niches when she saw them exploding with growth 🚀

In the words of some dude at Andreessen Horowitz, she found excellent Product Zeitgeist Fit.

You can try find the next zeitgeist with tools like Google Trends and Exploding Topics.

Two Types Of Tired

If you frequently find yourself too tired to work on your business 😴 it might help to learn about the two kinds of tired, as specified by Scott H Young.

The first tends to melt away once you start taking action. “The effort is all in the starting, not the doing.”

Whereas the second “persists throughout the activity itself.”

The trick is to know the difference, and respond accordingly:

make a distinction between a lack of inertia and persistent exhaustion from an activity being more hassle than help. If you push yourself to the gym, but feel good after you went, that’s good. On the other hand, if you constantly feel exhausted by everything, you might be pushing yourself towards burn out.

🍔 This advice from Andy Johns tastes pretty good:

More businesses need to be like Chick-fil-A and In-n-Out. The menu is simple, the service is excellent, and the quality is high. […]

The lesson is clear: do less, do it well, and be consistent. […]

Both In-n-Out and Chick-fil-A were started in the 1940s, but growth hasn’t plateaued nor has their cult-like following. Chick-fil-A’s revenue tripled between 2010 and 2019.

Meanwhile, the rest of the fast-food industry has attempted to compete in the market by serving up one ludicrous menu item after another. Carl’s Junior created fruit loop donuts. Taco Bell sold us Kit Kat quesadillas. It’s like the fast-food industry conducts strategic planning using junk food mad libs. And McDonald’s? They tried to make us eat salad!

Build and launch a digital product in 30 days

If you’ve been meaning to create a product, this free challenge by Money Lab’s Matt Giovanisci should help.

Starting Monday, Matt will be building a new online course himself and sharing his process step-by-step. You can follow along and build your thing, maybe even win a prize 🎁

How To Win

A 3-minute video from John Green – the guy who wrote The Fault In Our Stars – to watch whenever the going gets tough 😔

You have to hope and you have to go on. Even when you’ve lost more games than you’ve won and you’ve been down so far that a tie feels like winning, you have to pick up the ball and run it back to midfield and believe, in spite of it all, that this game is still winnable.

  1. Do you use any affiliate tracking software? Is there one that you recommend? It seems that the reviews either ding one or the other, and I suspect that they’re not exactly “disinterested”…

    1. Hi Kevin,

Do you mean software for tracking clicks on my affiliate links? Tracking conversions? Or maybe a database for quickly finding my affiliate links for different products/services?

I have Google Analytics set up to track the first. I can track conversions using the separate affiliate portals. And I keep a “database” of all my affiliate links in a simple Google Sheet.
