A brand new interview on eBiz Facts: On quitting my job, moving to Maui, and building a freelance writing business
Freelance writing ✍️ is one of the most popular ways to get started working online, for good reason: the barriers to entry are relatively low and you can make a decent living from it.
For me, the most interesting part of this week’s interview is how Kat Ambrose secured her first two clients: through existing connections. I reckon everyone should try similar before moving on to job boards like Upwork.
The best affiliate marketing course
This round-up review is the result of 300+ hours spent reviewing a bunch of affiliate marketing courses. My hope is that it will save you a lot of 🕒 and 💰
I’ve included a section in there on the best free affiliate marketing training I’ve found to date.
And my pick for the best affiliate marketing course is The Authority Site System by Authority Hacker, reviewed here.
Ladders of wealth creation
This article by Nathan Barry is a must-read for every online business builder.
Nathan is the founder of ConvertKit, which now pulls in revenue of about $1.5 million per month 🤑
“There’s a reliable progression that anyone can take to earn more and build wealth. In fact, I like to think of it as a series of ladders side by side. Each one can climb to different heights in both the quality of business and potential earnings.”
In the article he explains, for example, why it’s so much harder to build a SaaS business than a freelance business.
I also like that he shares several examples of when it makes sense to trade time for money.
Today’s top tech skills
Indeed has released some interesting data about the demand for tech skills over the past five years, based on job postings on their platform.
Six skills in the top 20 have seen significant growth in that time 📈
- Python – 124%
- AWS – 418%
- Git – 148%
- Machine learning – 439%
- Azure – 1107%
- Docker – 4162%
Interestingly, the most in-demand skill in 2014 held fairly steady and remains the most in-demand skill in 2019: SQL
So if you’re wondering what tech skills to add to your arsenal, one of those would be a good bet.
Important podcast tools
Listen App have put together “a curated directory of important tools used by podcasters” that’s getting a lot of buzz on Product Hunt.
374 free resources for marketing
FYI has put together a big list of “all the free marketing resources and templates you need in one place” that got even more buzz on Product Hunt.
What do the last 2 things have in common?
Here’s a clue, from James Clear’s latest newsletter:
Modern society is defined by an excess of opportunity. We have more information, more products, and more options than ever before.
As a result, curating, filtering, and refining are more important skills than ever before. Those who edit best will find the signal in the noise.
Curating, filtering, refining.
That’s exactly what Listen App are doing for podcasters, and what FYI are doing for marketers.
And it’s what I’m trying to do with this newsletter, for online business builders like you.
Maybe you could you do something like that yourself: curate the best of X for audience Y.
Monetize via display ads, affiliate marketing, your own products or services, or maybe even make it a paid newsletter on Substack.
You’d think a Udemy course with an average rating of 4.5 stars from more than 5000 reviews must be pretty good, right?
My faith in Udemy’s rating system got shook last week when I looked at 10 of the top affiliate marketing courses on the platform and found them all seriously lacking ☹️
Three takeaways from my research:
- Average course ratings on Udemy are meaningless
- Don’t believe the “last updated” date of a course
- Just because an instructor has a popular course on Udemy doesn’t mean they know what they’re talking about
I’ll put together a more in-depth review of Udemy in the coming months, showing you how to check if a course on there is actually worthwhile before you buy.
In the meantime, you can see how I arrived at the above takeaways here.
The Dream 100
This is a concept from the excellent Chet Holmes book, The Ultimate Sales Machine (not as sleazy as it sounds).
The idea is to get hyper-specific about who your dream clients/partners/prospects are, actually write out a list of your top 100, then focus relentlessly on building relationships with just those people 🤝
More than a decade ago, Russell Brunson of ClickFunnels put Tony Robbins on his Dream 100 list.
Earlier this week, Russell released a YouTube video showing how that dream eventually came true.
Some high-level long game right there!
November Finance Report
Here’s a report detailing everything I earned and spent last month while living in Bali and Chiang Mai.
It’s now been a year since I started focusing on affiliate marketing, and November was my best month yet for affiliate income 🎉
Aiming to push that much further in 2020.
That’ll do it for this week.
