Working Online From An RV
I’ve heard of a few people doing this over the years.
Profiled on a recent episode of the Side Hustle School podcast is a couple traveling around the US in an RV, with two cats and two dogs.
They – the humans, not the pets – earn money in a variety of ways, from affiliate marketing, to YouTube ads, to freelance work, to coaching.
Before You Build It, Make A Rule
Solid advice posted on Reddit:
In looking back at all of my failed business ideas, there’s a common theme: I tricked myself into thinking they were potentially profitable businesses. My flawed logic always was some version of this: “I’ll build this app, and then people will use it and like it, and then I’ll charge money for it.”
As obvious as it sounds, when you start a business you need to make money as quickly as possible.
The OP goes on to share a rule that has helped avoid tricking himself into starting unprofitable businesses:
The only reason I was able to snap out of it is by holding myself to the rule “companies I start need to be able to make $1000 in the first three months.”
Is there a rule like that you could set for yourself that would help you avoid starting – or sticking with – an unprofitable business?
Around The World In 80 Days (for $4,987)
Airbnb will soon be offering an 80-day trip around the world through 6 continents and 18 countries, including stops in places like Uzbekistan, Kenya, Bhutan, Patagonia and the Galapagos Islands.
The $4,987 price tag apparently includes all accommodation, transportation, food and drink. It works out to about $62 per day, which is a pretty good deal – I sincerely doubt you could visit all the same places yourself for less.
All you have to do is make sure you have enough empty pages in your passport, buy a round trip ticket to and from London, and get on that first flight. When you land, the first chapter of your around the world adventure begins. This trip departs on September 1 and returns on November 19.
The downside is that you’d only be spending an average of 4.5 days per country.
A bit too fast for my liking, but I’m sure some of you would be up for the adventure 🙂
Udemy’s got another sale on until midnight PST today (Friday). Tons of courses priced as low as $9.99.
19 Examples of the Best Marketing Campaigns on the Internet
This is a fun list that will get your creative juices flowing.
Worth noting that almost all of the featured campaigns are video-based (or are most easily explained via video).
My favorite campaign from the list: Burger King hacking OK Google.
I’m a big fan of Ahrefs for keyword research – and keyword research is a must nowadays if you create content – but it’s a little on the pricey side.
Ubersuggest is a free alternative that’s starting to look pretty powerful.
(Related: Next week I’ll be posting a lengthy screencast in Freedom Business Builder walking through my keyword research and content creation process, and how you can use similar to grow your own site or step up your freelance writing game. We’ll follow up the screencast with an exclusive live Q&A for FBB members. More info about FBB here if you’d like to join.)
Just because you failed…
This tweet from Shane Parrish is a good reminder:
“Just because you failed doesn’t mean you can’t succeed. We all fail. Mentally resilient people realize that its not failure that defines your identity but how you respond.”
If you’re looking to improve your mental resilience, I recommend reading The Obstacle Is The Way (available for only $2 on Kindle as I’m writing this).
A wifi hotspot that generates income?
- You buy a device that turns your home internet into a public hotspot.
- The device extends your signal 200 times farther than a standard WiFi connection.
- You get paid when other people use the hotspot.
That’s the promise of Helium, “a startup that uses a blockchain to facilitate wireless connections.”
Buying a hotspot will cost you $495 – US only – but there’s no info available on how much you’d earn, just that payment would be in the form of a new cryptocurrency.
Worth keeping an eye on.
6-figures selling blank books on Amazon
Yup, this is a thing.
Think journals, diaries, planners, notebooks and sketchbooks.
From the PDF highlight reel that accompanies the interview:
Rachel said her process is very similar. She starts off browsing Amazon and other marketplaces online, as well as browsing physical bookstores for what’s selling. A tip that’s worked well for her is to add some “millennial speak” style catchphrases in the title. An example being a daily planner she published last year called, “Get Shit Done.” This book bought in between $6k-$11k a month for the first few months.
Fair warning though, from Nick at Side Hustle Nation:
“there’s some seasonality that comes into play, there are some competitive factors that come into play, and there’s a little bit of a gold rush feel to all of this.”
That’ll do it for this week.
Keep her lit.
