Making money online doesn’t seem to be a regular thing for Glenn.
As far as I can tell, the bulk of his online business experience comes from one domain deal in 2018. That’s when Glenn sold a domain he’d owned since 1995.
The domain was plants.com and it was sold to 1-800-Flowers.com for a reported $450,000.
As noted, Glenn’s domain sold for $450,000.
It’s unclear exactly how much he profited from the sale, but we can make an educated guess.
First of all, Glenn would have had to acquire the domain in 1995. That may have cost him $100 for a two-year registration (source). Domain renewal prices have come down over the years, but let’s say the cost of both registering and renewing the domain for 23 years cost him less than $1000.
He apparently sold the domain via the Sedo marketplace, which takes a fee of 10-20%.
If we take the high end of that we can guess that Glenn earned at least $360,000 from the sale of the domain, minus the $1000 in registration and renewal fees over the years = $359,000.
As reported in a 2018 interview with Glenn on Domain Name Wire:
In the 1990s Stokes, the proprietor of a Louisiana business called Stokes Tropicals, set out to create a website selling tropical plants.
[…] “At that time web names weren’t even fashionable,” he explained. “Everyone was picking out what they wanted. Cars.com, you know, generics. I figured the best thing for us was Plants.com.”
According to our framework Glenn’s domain flipping deal is a resale business, which would be considered a Level 3 online business.
