According to the New York Times, half a million people downloaded Replika when the pandemic was getting real in April 2020. Apparently the app has raised nearly $11 million in funding and I’ve seen multiple reports that it pulls in $4.1 million in annual revenue.
The NYT article also covers the kinda creepy origin story of Replika: after losing a friend in a car accident, founder Eugenia Kuyda was reading their old text messages and wondered if she could create a chatbot that would emulate their conversations.
“I wanted a bot that could talk like him,” Ms. Kuyda said.
