June 2019 Finance Report

Everything I earned and spent in Bali and Kuala Lumpur

Below you’ll find all my finance details for June 2019.

I began the month in hospital thanks to a dose of dengue fever, then was in Ubud for the rest of the month except for a quick 3-day trip to Kuala Lumpur to renew my Indonesian visa.

I’ve been tracking everything I earn and spend since January 2011, just a few weeks after quitting my day job. Every month since, I’ve published one of these finance reports.

Sharing this info publicly keeps me accountable and hopefully gives you some insight into how I earn a living online.

I was aiming to keep everything under €2,000 for the month. Failed miserably. Spent more on that Kuala Lumpur trip than expected, and I didn’t foresee some of those business expenses.

Biggest Regret?

Can’t say I regret any of my spending in June. Nothing thoughtless or silly there.

It makes me anxious spending so much more than I earn in a month – and this was my lowest earning month since January 2016 – but I expected to have a couple of months like this in 2019 with the transition in my business.

2019 So Far

Here’s how I’m doing this year in terms of profit and loss:

January € 653 $ 747
February € 529 $ 601
March € 242 $ 272
April € 240 $ 269
May € 171 $ 196
June € 1,906 $ 2,163
Total € 1,129 $ 1,280

Where That Leaves Me

I had €15,140 / $17,339 to my name at the end of May.

Taking into account all my June income and expenditure, and the most recent exchange rates – I have accounts in EUR, HKD and USD – my total bank and cash balances now work out to €14,095 / €15,995. 27

Outlook For July

Affiliate income should again be around the $1,000 mark, and I have a small bit of freelance income still due. Overall though I doubt I’ll pull in more than €1,500 for the month.

Expenses should be down a bit. I’ll be staying put in Bali for the whole month and sticking to a fairly solid routine. That helps save on travel, accommodation, and food and drink.

My outsourcing expenses will likely increase though as I look to hire another contractor.

At some point, I also need to book flights and accommodation for a trip to Chiang Mai in November, but I’ll probably leave that until August.

Keeping expenses to €2,500 or less for the month should be doable.
